“App is damaged” on macOS

Gatekeeper's quarantine flag, and the one command that clears it.

On this page

The full message is “Natively” is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Bin. Nothing is damaged. macOS attaches an extended attribute named com.apple.quarantine to every file a browser downloads, and shows this wording when Gatekeeper cannot verify the notarisation of a quarantined bundle.

The fix

Move Natively into your Applications folder first, then run this in Terminal:

Command
xattr -cr /Applications/Natively.app
Clears every extended attribute, recursively, on the app bundle.

Then open the app normally. If you installed it somewhere other than /Applications, substitute the real path — dragging the app onto the Terminal window after typing xattr -cr will insert it correctly, spaces and all.

The right-click alternative

On some macOS versions you can skip Terminal: right-click the app in Applications, choose Open, and confirm at the prompt. This registers an explicit user override for that bundle. It does not work on every version — from macOS 15 onwards the path is System Settings → Privacy & Security, where a button labelled Open Anyway appears for a few minutes after a blocked launch attempt.

If it still will not open

  • Confirm you have the right architecture. An Apple Silicon build on an Intel Mac fails at launch, sometimes with a misleading message.
  • Confirm the download completed. A truncated .dmg really is damaged; re-download and compare the file size against the release page.
  • Confirm you are on macOS 12 or later.

Still stuck on something?
